TN CM warns pvt schools against high fees

Chennai, May 5 ,2011 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today warned private schools against collecting exhorbitant fees and threatening the students with sacking if they failed to pay the fees.

Answering a set of questions, the Chief Minister said the government would not remain a silent spectator if the private schools collected exhorbitant fees and sack students who failed to pay the fees.

Stating that there were reports that some schools were forcing the students to part with high fees and threaten them with sacking if they failed to pay the fees, he said this was not only illegal but totally unfair on their parts. He said the government had already indicated that it would come out with a new fee structure and advised the private schools to remain patient.

Karunanidhi said there were 12,000 private schools in the state and when the Govindarajan committee announced the fee structure, 4,000 schools accepted them, while the remaining schools went to the court or complained that the fee structure would not be viable.

After the Madras High Court directed the government to revise the fee structure, taking into consideration the infrastructural facilities available in some schools, Justice Govindarajan stepped down.

Following this, the government appointed a new committee, headed by Justice Raviraj Pandian, who had completed the enquiries and all set to come out with the new fee structure, the Chief Minister said.
